Sight Fair
Ensuring the continuing gift of good eyesight has always been a foundational activity for the WHLC. In promoting sight the Club holds an annual Sight Fair in Whittier. The Sight Fair is hosted by the WHLC and is in conjunction with other local Lions club organizations and several local nonprofit partners. During this event, attendees are provided FREE vision screening and FREE eyeglasses that have been collected, cleaned, recalibrated, and recycled to new users for further use. During our last Sight Fair event, 265 patients came by and we distributed 207 recycled eyeglasses to those in attendance. In addition, 31 patients were provided with new custom-made eyeglasses. Noteworthy is that during this Sight Fair, 70 patients received eyeglasses for the first time.
Scholarship Presentations
The Club has always been a promoter of higher education. One of the ways the Club promotes continuing education is by providing scholarships to graduating Whittier high school students. In this regard, the Club has annually awarded students from the six Whittier high schools (La Serna HS; Whittier HS; Pioneer HS; Cal HS; Santa Fe HS and St. Paul HS) achievement-based scholarships. We are positive the fine young students receiving scholarships will sometime down the line pay it forward and help make our beloved Whittier community an even better place to live, work and visit.
